Less icing, more cake: Howard Bilerman on recording

A self-portrait by Howard Bilerman.

Howard Bilerman has left the building! Yesterday afternoon, he finished up his week-long stint at the Banff Centre and caught a flight back to Montreal in time for his birthday.

It was a productive week, too, with Mise en Scene recording three polished tracks, Doldrums laying down beds for an album-in-progress, and The Abramson Singers gaining serious headway on an EP of new material – all with his support.

Howard’s been recording bands since he was a teenager, using his tape-recorder as a free pass to get into shows underage. Running the Hotel2Tango analog studio 20 years later, his outlook hasn’t changed: represent the band as organically as possible, as if you were there in the room with them.

One of the first days Howard was here, I pulled him aside to ask him about his approach to producing. Here’s that conversation, complete with music by some of the groups he’s worked with.

Happy birthday, Howard!
