Shane Koyczan is a pretty rare kind of celebrity. He’s a celebrity poet. In February of this year he released a spoken-word poem on YouTube that’s since had more than nine million views. It’s called To This Day, and it’s dedicated to the bullied and the beautiful. Many of the topics Koyczan talks about in his work (like mental health and bullying) aren’t easy ones to digest, but it doesn’t deter Koyczan’s fans. Perhaps the secret to his success is that he approaches his craft with an audience-centric sensibility.
Koyczan was here recently, writing and recording, and I asked him what he thinks turns people off of poetry, and what he’s doing differently. Here’s what he had to say:
