Banff International Research Station to receive $3.6-million

The Globe and Mail — October 20, 2005. A Banff research station operated by five western Canadian universities will receive $3.6-million from the U.S. and Mexican governments over the next five years. The Banff International Research Station has been involved in breakthroughs in fuel cell technology and mathematical models of the spread of SARS, said Ivar Ekeland, the director of the UBC-based Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, which oversees the station. It’s the first time for $550,000 in Mexican funding, and the American funding has never been in the form of a direct grant, he said. [BIRS is located on the Banff Centre campus]

Canada’s student representatives at the 2005 International Mathematical Olympiad to train at BIRS

Canada Newswire — May 30, 2005. Six of Canada’s best high school mathematics students have been chosen to represent their country at the 46th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is the world championship mathematics competition for high school students and is being held this year in Mérida, Mexico from July 8 to July 19. The six students will be attending a special IMO Training Camp at the University of Calgary and the Banff International Research Station from June 25 to July 10.
